Privacy Policy

BOTCH — Storyteller Edition is developed and published by Dice Religion, an independent developer. It is an unofficial, non-commercial companion app for the board game Blood on the Clocktower, a creation of The Pandemonium Institute. It is free, contains no advertising and no purchases of any kind. For any question about this policy or about your data, contact:

2.1 Nothing is collected by us, or by anyone else

BOTCH contains no advertising SDK, no analytics, no crash reporting and no third-party service of any kind. There is no sign-in, no account, and no user profile. Dice Religion operates no servers and no database, and receives no information from this app whatsoever.

The app also has no access to the internet. The AndroidINTERNETpermission is not merely unused — it is actively removed from the app at build time, and an automated check fails the build if anything ever reintroduces it. An app without that permission cannot open a network connection. This is what makes every other statement on this page verifiable rather than merely promised.

2.2 Information stored only on your device

BOTCH is a digital replacement for the physical grimoire a Storyteller keeps behind their screen, so it necessarily records the state of the game you are running. All of it is written to the app’s private storage area, which no other app on your phone can read. None of it is transmitted anywhere.

The most personal thing this amounts to is a list of the first names of the people sitting at your table, and which character each of them was given — whatever you chose to type into the seat list. You are free to use nicknames, initials or seat numbers instead; the app does not care what you type and never checks it against anything.

Android encrypts app-private storage at the filesystem level on every device this app runs on. Backups are switched off in both of Android’s mechanisms, so this data is not copied to the cloud and is not carried across in a device-to-device transfer.

2.3 What the app does not collect

• No name, email address, phone number or postal address for you, the user.
• No precise or approximate location.
• No contacts, photos, camera, microphone or SMS access.
• No advertising identifier, device identifier or any other persistent identifier.
• No payment or financial information — the app is free and contains no purchases.
• No health, biometric or sensitive personal data.
• No usage analytics, event logging or telemetry of any kind.

The Credits screen contains a single link to the developer’s page on the Google Play Store. Tapping it opens that address in your own browser or Play app; nothing is sent when you do not tap it, and anything you do after that point is governed by Google’s privacy policy, not this one.

BOTCH requests no Android permissions at all. Not storage, not network, not anything. If you look at the app’s entry in Android Settings, the permission list is empty.

This is unusual enough to be worth explaining, because importing and exporting files normally implies a storage permission. It does not here — see the next section.

BOTCH lets you write your own homebrew characters, export them to a file, and import files that you or someone else created. This is the only feature in the app that touches anything outside its own private storage, so it is worth being precise about.

The app uses Android’s Storage Access Framework, which works by delegation:

• The app asks the Android system to show you a file picker.
• You choose a file, or choose where to save one.
• The system gives the app access to that one item, and nothing else.

The app never sees a file path, never browses a folder, and cannot reach any file you did not personally point it at. That is precisely why it needs no storage permission, and why it never will.

Exports contain only your own homebrew characters — their names, descriptions, role types and night orders, plus a pack name and the app version. An export never contains your game in progress, your seat names, your saved rosters, your settings, or any identifier for you or your device. It also cannot contain the official character data bundled with the app.

Exported files go only where you send them. If you then share one, that is your own action, and where it travels afterwards is outside this app and outside this policy.

Nobody. There is no third party to share anything with. The app has no network access, no embedded services, no advertising partners and no analytics provider. We do not sell your personal information, because we do not have any of it.

Everything the app stores is on your own device and under your own control:

• Delete a single game — ending a game from the Rounds screen clears that session.
• Delete a saved roster — the load-roster list has a delete control on each entry, with a confirmation.
• Delete all your homebrew characters — Settings has a “danger zone” that removes every character you wrote.
• Delete everything — uninstall the app, or use Settings → Apps → BOTCH → Storage → Clear data on your device.

Uninstalling removes every one of the files listed in section 2.2, immediately and permanently. Because Dice Religion holds no data about you, there is nothing further for us to delete and no request you need to send us. If you would like help with any of the above, write to the address in section 1 and we will respond within 30 days.

BOTCH is intended for a general audience. It is a companion tool for a tabletop game, contains no advertising, no purchases and no online interaction, and is not directed to children. Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children either.

Dice Religion retains no data, because none is ever collected or transmitted. The files described in section 2.2 remain on your device for as long as you keep the app installed, and are removed when you clear the app’s data or uninstall it. There is no other copy anywhere.

The strongest security property of this app is what it does not do. With no network access there is no data in transit to intercept; with no servers there is no user database that could be breached; with no accounts there are no credentials to steal. Data on your device sits in private app storage, which Android encrypts at rest and which no other app can read.

Imported files are the one thing the app reads that it did not write, and they are treated as untrusted: an imported pack can never overwrite a character you already have, can never escape the area of the app reserved for homebrew, and is checked before any of it is accepted.

None. No information leaves your device, so there is nothing to transfer to another country and no processor anywhere handling your data.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or restrict the processing of your personal information, or to object to it, or to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority. In practice these rights are satisfied directly and immediately here: the only data that exists is on your own device, you can read and change all of it inside the app, and you can delete all of it at any moment without asking anyone. We hold nothing to disclose, correct or erase on your behalf. Any question about this can go to the address in section 1.

If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted at this URL with an updated effective date. Material changes will also be reflected in the app’s Google Play Data safety disclosure.
