There is a particular feeling that certain songs tent to evoke, and no, it's not Nostalgia.
There are some song lyrics that come to mind when I think about a time so far away. This memory, it holds a strong scent, the scent of a feeling that I haven't felt in a while.
Back when we were kids and technology wasn't evolving so fast that it rendered us so apathetic, that deep and troubling issues that plagued the world felt like a joke. When people looked at terror and war and actually felt a little bad about it, you know? Times when technology wasn't so far off that most of us were just trying to catch up to it all the time. Back when technology almost felt hampered, and our imagination was the limit. Now, imagination feels slow, when technology just sits there waiting, updating, upgrading, years beyond our minds can comprehend.
Funnily enough, all this reminds me of are songs. Songs that I used to listen to as a kid, on an MP3 player, cycling away for hours on end. Some songs come to mind. Songs that evoke a memory so old and deep that the hinges the illusion of still being in that moment. Songs like -
The Great Escape by Boys Like Girls (or) Take My Hand by Simple Plan (or) Forever Young by Alphaville (or) Tarzan Boy by Baltimora (or) The 4:55 minute mark to 5:55 minute mark the the Lord of the Rings soundtrack - The Bridge of Khazad Dum
I could go on and on, but I'm sure the point has been sufficiently made now.
There are a lot of songs, truly way too many songs. But the reason for me to mention at least these, is so that you do not confuse the intention of this write-up of mine. You see, when I talk about these songs, everyone around the world would have their own beliefs, memories, hopes, and dreams attached to them like a stain no detergent can remove. This "Stain" transports them to a feeling, not just a memory, but an entire feeling, they remember their issues of the time, their hopes and wishes, the smell of the road or way the wind felt that day. All this is a feeling that comes to them flooding the moment they hear that tune, those words, the divine music whatever it may be, to transport them to a time so long ago they thought they almost forgot.
Now, that is not a very big deal, not a very big deal at all. It is quite common, happens to the best of us. But that is not what I am talking about again. While it is a very nice feeling to remember those good ol days and what not with song, however, what I really wanted to talk about was that there was this one specific emotion the above songs that they evoked, unfortunately, they evoked this mostly back then. And you'll have to do a bit of nostalgic/subconscious memory acrobatics to feel this one again.
You see, when I heard those songs, riding a cycle, or driving a bike, no matter at what point in my life I heard those songs, they always evoked this one particular feeling to fucking reach out and grab it. Reach out where? Grab what? I don't know, my destiny I think? I think I needed to reach out to the horizon, that I chased so desperately, and grab on to my destiny. Was my destiny glorious? Was I destined to be someone great enough to stand amongst the other legends of my time? Absolutely no idea but what I know for sure is that these songs definitely did add to the fire raging inside, the fire of yearning. Yearning to become something great, and for some reason I thought it was beyond that horizon.
You see, this is not about destinies and horizons. This is really about the feeling because in all honesty, I do not feel it anymore -- not in the same sense at least. You see, back when I was a kid, the world and its possibilities felt endless. The entire world was a stage awaiting the entry of me. Now, I don't think that anymore. Because even though, technically the world has become even more endless with all these possibilities lying around here and there, on the roads, on the tress, on the corners of streets. It feels like a scam really. I don't really think anymore that there are ways left in the world to do great things. It started with "we have an app for that", and while that was all well and good, now "we have an AI for that" just somehow feels wrong. We are beings of purpose, maybe that's why we believe so strongly in a God. Even though I am someone who would not consider themselves as a being of purpose, or someone who believes in God. This sudden loss of Horizon evoked inspiration feels quite depressing. That is not something I would have liked to happen, now when I ride at sunset, all the way unto the nearing never ending horizon, what am I to inspire myself with? The greatest joke here however is that this is me saying it as an Absurdist, this day and age, is the literal absurdist dream. We are on the brink of a world where soon a lot of people are very quickly going to lose not only their daily means but also purpose. And yet, instead of only finding it funny, I also find it a little sad. A little melancholic. It's like that song, Mad World. That was the only song that could evoke this emotion from me back then, and I find it fascinating how it fits so well today.
Well, I don't know if it is just me who feels like this but I am sure of one thing though, there will soon be a lot more who are going to resonate.
I hope you heard the call of the Horizon I hope you remember what she sounded like Cause she doesn't sing anymore folks That might just have been the last time.
